How to Work With Your Energy Ebbs and Flows

 Understanding Your Energy Flow

A lot of us pay too much attention to time management. We act under the assumption that if we have time to do something, then we can do it.
In reality though, our ability to complete work is much more related to our energy. If you don’t have the energy necessary to focus or to work, then you won’t be able to do it or your work won’t be as good.
And as it happens, our energy levels come on in waves and are largely out of our control.

For example, first thing in the morning many of us struggle with something called ‘sleep inertia’. This means our brains are still groggy from the night’s sleep and we aren’t as productive.
Likewise, we tend to be less efficient right after lunch or dinner. That’s because an influx of carbohydrates gets broken down to tryptophan and that tryptophan is then converted into serotonin. In turn, the serotonin is converted to melatonin, making us sleepy!

How to keep your Thyroid healthy?

There are many holistic approaches that can help you to keep and heal your thyroid naturally. One of the most powerful and simple to implement is nutrition.

Most people don’t realize that what you eat has a direct impact on thyroid health. A diet rich in sugar and processed foods can increase your risk of thyroid disorders and cause nutrient deficiencies. Gluten, A1 casein, heavy metals, trans fats, and other harmful compounds found in everyday foods affect thyroid function.

Your thyroid needs specific nutrients to work properly and maintain optimum hormone levels. Foods rich in iodine, selenium, zinc, and iron should be a staple in your diet.

Note: It is important that you try and get these nutrients from natural food sources as much as possible. While you can use supplements, you need to be very careful not to take in too much because an overload of some nutrients such as zinc and iodine can have a negative impact on your health. Later in this series, we will discuss supplementation in more detail.

Add these foods on your plate to heal your thyroid naturally and enjoy better health:

Coconut Oil

Rich in lauric and capryllic acid, coconut oil supports thyroid function and promotes weight loss. This superfood boasts medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which increase metabolism and improve insulin response. People with hypothyroidism have a hard time losing weight and feel tired all the time. Coconut oil can boost their energy and metabolic rate, fight oxidative stress, and keep their thyroid hormones within a normal range.

Sea Vegetables

Dulse seaweed, nori, wakame, kombu, and other sea vegetables have the highest concentrations of iodine of all foods. They are also an excellent source of bioavailable iron, vanadium, polyphenols, terpenoids, and other vital nutrients that promote thyroid health. Due to their high antioxidant levels, sea vegetables reduce oxidative stress and help prevent cancer.

Brazil Nuts

It takes just five Brazil nuts to meet your daily requirements for selenium, a mineral that supports thyroid health. Selenium deficiency has been linked to a higher risk of Hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroidism, hair loss, joint pain, and fatigue. This nutrient aids in the conversion of thyroxine (T4) into triiodothyronine, fights inflammation, and neutralizes free radicals. In addition to selenium, Brazil nuts provide large amounts of fiber and heart-healthy fats that promote weight loss.

This spice boasts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, inhibits tumor growth, and supports liver detox. Research indicates that turmeric can positively impact thyroid function and prevent thyroid cancer due to its high curcumin levels. It also reduces thyroxine induced oxidative stress and protects your organs from damage caused by thyroid disease. You can either add turmeric to smoothies and foods, or use it in supplement form.

The B-complex vitamins and omega-3s in salmon nourish your thyroid gland and keep it functioning at its peak. The thyroid needs dietary fat to work properly and make hormones. Salmon also contain protein, which helps transport thyroid hormones to your cells. Packed with healthy fats, it boosts cardiovascular health, lowers inflammation, and slows down aging. If you don’t like salmon, take high quality fish oil supplements.

Organ Meats

Organ meats, especially beef liver and kidney, are high in zinc, iron, selenium, potassium, calcium, B-complex vitamins, and fat-soluble vitamins. These nutrients are crucial for thyroid health. Loaded with coenzyme Q10, organ meats prevent oxidative stress, boost energy production, and keep your skin young. They also provide a highly bioavailable form of iron as well as choline, retinol, and amino acids. Liver contains a unique “anti-fatigue factor,” which makes it ideal for those struggling with low energy, tiredness, muscle pain, and other symptoms caused by thyroid disease. Heart is the best natural source of CoQ10, while beef tongue abounds in vitamin B12 and choline.

As you can see there are simple dietary tweaks you can make to start the healing process naturally. Start having some fun with meal planning by experimenting with new foods and recipes today!
